Plans to continue to reinforce what is one of the largest concentrations of life science expertise in UK illustrate a clear commitment to science and technology research, development and commercialisation in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire is home to internationally renowned research and development facilities, offering a unique platform of capabilities in science and technology development.

The Health Protection Agency's (HPA) Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response in Porton Down is a world leader in high quality microbiological research and testing. It also undertakes research into infectious diseases and manufactures and commissions a number of healthcare products.

NHS Innovations South West, based in Salisbury, is one of nine regional innovations hubs set up to identify, develop and commercialise innovations and intellectual property created by NHS staff.

Companies in the area include NanoSight, an award winning company providing detection of nanometre and sub-micron particles by optical microscopy, and CI Precision, which supplies precision equipment and systems for pharmaceutical manufacturers, scientific researchers and other industries.

TETRICUS INCUBATOR UNIT offers some of the best tenant laboratories and research facilities in the UK, alongside specialist support to new and growing bioscience companies, contributing to the transfer of defence technology to commercial applications.

PORTON SCIENCE PARK - a £10m new state-of-the-art science park in South Wiltshire, the Porton Science Park will be based near leading scientific institutions, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) at the Porton Down site, near Salisbury.

It will comprise 355,000 sqft (approximately 3.3 ha) of research and development accommodation and will provide facilities for science and research based industries. The first phase will include a 23,000 sq ft (0,2 ha) innovation building and two science blocks, and further phases will be developed specifically for occupiers.

Phase One of development consists of:

  • An Incubator Building – to provide flexible/cost effective space for SMEs/new occupiers
  • Grow-on space, offices and labs – to provide building space that is immediately available for occupation and provide grow-on space from the Incubator Building, as well as facilities that are available whilst new private sector buildings are delivered to specific end user requirements.
