Food and Drink and Land-based Industries

Wiltshire enjoys a well-established and thriving agricultural, food and drink sector, with an expanding number of dynamic and flourishing food and drink producers choosing to establish their centres of operation in the area.

The sector employs over 7.5% of the total economically active population in Wiltshire, above both the national and regional averages.

Wiltshire has a strong, long-standing tradition of food and drink production, with some companies such as Wadworth (the brewer of the famous 6X cask ale) dating back to 1875. The county also feature organisations on the forefront of research and innovation, such as Nutricia, pioneers of Advanced Medical Nutrition in Europe and a specialised unit of the international food company Danone.

Other examples of renowned companies that are thriving in Wiltshire are Cereal Partner Nestle, the second largest manufacturer in UK, with a factory in Trowbridge; Lyons Seafood, one of the UK's leading seafood suppliers and apetito, a global organisation providing frozen food and catering solutions to care homes, local authorities and hospitals.

Greggs Bakery, the leading bakery retailer in the UK, is an example of the latest food and drink sector investment in Wiltshire. It has plans to build a factory and distribution centre on a 5.5 acre site at Solstice Park in Amesbury.

With many land-based colleges covering agriculture and farm-based activities in Wiltshire and the South West, the county's high growth food and drink companies can easily access training, consultancy, knowledge transfer, and research and innovation services from local or regional universities with expertise in the food and drink industry
